How to build a museum in your back yard?
That’s the question that many of us are asking ourselves after a year of renovations to a former home that has become a haven for the homeless and in some cases, the mentally ill.
It’s one of many questions we’re trying to answer at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) this fall as we prepare to unveil the first-ever museum of the homeless, which is expected to open in September.
The museum will be modeled after the famous St. Francis of Assisi’s St. Andrew’s Church, which was a hub for homeless people in the early 20th century and is now a historic landmark.
In an interview, museum director Chris McLean said the goal is to create a space that is inclusive of everyone who walks through its doors.
He said the idea was born out of a desire to make a space where people feel comfortable and at peace, even when they don’t have the resources to be in the museum.
“People will feel comfortable walking into a space with a collection of their own belongings, whether that’s artwork, or they might just be holding a cup of tea,” McLean explained.
“It’s about making a space for people to feel comfortable in a space and not feel isolated.”
The museum’s exterior will be a mix of historic architecture and modern design, including the famous bronze door with a large window that was created by Italian architect Alessandro Armani in 1931.
Armanis famous bronze doors were also featured in the 2008 movie “The Last Supper,” which featured actor Anthony Hopkins.
McLean hopes the museum will also provide a way to talk about homelessness in Chicago.
“The problem is that people aren’t talking about homelessness,” he said.
“There’s a lot of stigma about homelessness.
“And it’s a space you can actually walk into, which I think is really exciting.” “

Its goal is for the museum to open to the public in October 2019.
The project is expected be completed by the end of 2019.
“A lot of times we think about the homeless people that are in our neighborhoods as sort of invisible and forgotten, but I think in this case, we’re bringing them out and showing them who they really are,” McLeod said.
The city of Chicago, in partnership with HUD, will be the host of the museum and is donating the $4.4 million budget.
The art will be displayed in a gallery of more than 1,000 artifacts from Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods, including more than 50 works by local artists and architects.
The building will be home to a permanent collection of more that 200,000 works, as well as exhibits on a range of topics.
The Art Institute will also host a series of events throughout the year, including an annual fundraiser that raises funds for homeless shelters, arts programs and education.
In September, the museum was also announced as a “place to explore Chicago’s history and future,” and a partner of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
The AIC hopes the city of its largest city will see the museum as a model for the rest of the country.
McLeod described the AIC as a new kind of museum that is not only focused on its own projects, but on bringing people together in a community-based way.
“We’re trying not to be just a museum, but a community,” he explained.
The Aic will also offer free, monthly classes for the public, which will be available to students, seniors and the homeless.
“One of the things that really appeals about our museum is that it’s all about people,” Mclean said.
While the project is all about the museum, the Art Museum of Chicago hopes to be a place where people from different backgrounds and walks of life can come together and experience something that will hopefully spark a dialogue about homelessness, mental illness and community building.
“That’s what we want the Art to be about, that’s what it’s really about, and it’s the thing that’s really going to drive the museum,” McLaure said.
