Al Jazeera’s Scott Smith investigates whether Pittsburgh museums and other arts-based facilities have any chance of staying relevant after decades of neglect.
The city’s museums are known for their unique collections, some of which have been on display since before the invention of the printing press.
The Pittsburgh Art Museum, for example, houses one of the largest collections of art by European painters in the world.
The city also hosts a number of cultural festivals, including the International New York City Music Festival, and the annual Pittsburgh International Film Festival.
But most visitors to the city visit its museums for an array of reasons.
Many of the city’s best-known works are also housed in the city-owned and operated museum buildings.
The most iconic Pittsburgh museums include the American Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Art, which are both part of the American Art Museum.
The Museum of Science and Industry has a large collection of science-related artifacts.
The Carnegie Library houses an extensive collection of books, magazines, journals and audio and video recordings.
The other notable museums in Pittsburgh include the Pittsburgh Museum of Industry, the PPG Mellon Science Center and the Heinz Museums.
The Pittsburgh Museum Art Gallery and the PPL Art Gallery are part of The Pennsylvania Museum of Technology, and both are in the Carnegie Mellon University Graduate Center.
